Orycon

Ear worm of the day: The theme song from the old cartoon Underdog.

The administrators for the morning miracle added some incentives and restarted the challenge. I took advantage and decided to wait until after the end of the weekend to start daily practice because of Orycon.

Orycon is a yearly speculative fiction convention (science fiction, fantasy and horror) in Portland, Oregon. It was my first, and in a lot of ways my favorite SF convention. I have a lot of friends that I see only at Orycon, even though many of those friends are local. Some of them are not local but once were, or have made a habit of coming up after being invited as panelists and guests of honor.

Sadly, it is likely the incomparable Annie Bellet’s last year as a regular panelist. She will be moving to the Netherlands this summer. We didn’t see much of each other, but I enjoy her insight and companionship, and I’ll miss her. She’s one of the few writers that I went out of my way to visit, even though the commute was bleh, outside of the convention circuit.

I think my favorite panel this time around was the historical accuracy panel. We debunked a bit, tossed in a few anecdotes, and talked about researching and the benefits of historical research. I also had a great time at the Writing Believable Sex Scenes panel. We got into politics a bit, but mainly we discussed things like leading in, developing relationships, and gender. We didn’t have time to get into POV, unfortunately.

Today is the last day of the convention. I plan on visiting with friends, getting a little writing done, and then I’ll shlep my books home and call it good. And tomorrow, it’s back to work!
